Every artist can make this new year a more artistically productive and creative one by setting goals with their New Year's Resolution.

Goals in the form of New Year’s resolutions are a solid way to start the year and bolster an artist’s career. Even novice artists can benefit from some goal setting. These types of goals can encompass increasing creativity, production, business or networking.

Creativity

An artist that find’s themselves lacking in creativity can make a New Year’s Resolution that is designed to help boost ingenuity. For example, a change of scenery often stimulates the imaginative areas of the brain. Here are some ideas for a resolution of this type:

  • Deciding on traveling to a new location every month
  • Choosing to paint plen air instead of inside
  • Shopping at a new art store either in real life or virtually
  • Visit a new art gallery

Those trying out new locations should make a resolution to carry a sketchbook with them. This way the creative inspiration can be captured as it strikes. The very act of sketching can create even more ideas for painting or drawing projects, too.

An artist can also increase creativity by trying new mediums. An artist can make a goal to try a new medium every month, try combining different mediums with the ones they already use, or master one new medium before the year is over. Not only will the new medium add to artistic inspiration, the artist may just find a new avenue of expression.

Production

Another type of goal deals with setting new standards for artistic production. If an artist wants to create more works of art, the best way to accomplish that is to make a resolution at the first of the year. The decision can be to develop one new piece a week, month, or even bi-monthly, depending on the artist’s speed and comfort level.

Business

A resolution to take an art business more seriously is always a good idea. Part of this is setting goals to catalog art for tax and insurance purposes. Resolutions to learn how photograph paintings and other art pieces can get a painter started with the process.

Networking

Networking is an important part of becoming a successful artist. The start of a new year is the perfect time to make new connections to take a career further. Setting New Year’s resolutions to join social networking groups such as MySpace and Facebook, create custom business cards and starting a business website are a great way to promote an art business.

Creating several solid artistic goals and sticking with them can insure a happy and productive year ahead.
