The Internet is a great resource for artists. It has artist reference sites for drawings and paintings, sites for inspiration, and sites for how-to articles on new techniques, but some of the best online resources are on video. Some are informative, some are funny, and some are inspiring. Here are a few of the best.
Drawing Videos
The Structure of Man website by comic artist Riven Phoenix has easy-to-follow video demos on how to draw the human body for use in comics. These are shorts from his DVD lesson plan and work very well as bite sized clips of information.
This “YouTube Pop Artist” has several videos dedicated to drawing. Check out all the videos from other artists on his page, as well.
Behind-the-Scenes
ON Networks’ For Art's Sake is an award-winning show that gives a ”behind-the-scenes” look at contemporary art. The show was created by digital media producer Lori Apthorp, who wanted to provide an inside look into modern art and the artists themselves. Each show contains interviews of artists as they explain their inspiration and creative process, as well as an insider’s look at their work and creative process. The show has featured such artists as comic book artists Patrick Atangan and Brian Apthorp, sculptor John Frame, and painters Peter Zokosky, F. Scott Hess and Kim Merrill.
Just for Laughs
If you need a break from the seriousness of being an artist, take a look at this video. An elephant shows artists around the world that humans aren’t the only ones who can create beautiful art. That’s right, the elephant can paint, and paint well. In the video it creates a self portrait that is undeniably fantastic.
Strange Media
This video will open most artist’s eyes to the possibility of art being in even the most common of places. Painting with coffee is nothing new, but this artist uses a cup of coffee as his canvas and creamer as his paint.
You may be a redneck artist if you paint with this type of medium! The artist in this video paints with barbecued ribs. It really brings new meaning to sleeping, breathing, and eating art.
Women In Art
The Women in Art video is a collage of all the famous paintings of women throughout the ages. It is fascinating to see how similar many of the paintings are.
