Destinations for Artists Series features the Marquis Los Cabos Beach Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico as an artist-worthy destination.
As part of the Destinations for Artists series, this month we feature the lovely Marquis Los Cabos Beach Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico. From the outside the resort looks like what you would expect, a beautiful, soothing resort. But on closer inspection you realize that it is much more. It is a haven of artistic beauty. “We have invested in the belief that a beach vacation need not jettison the world of aesthetic delight, and that art can be the perfect reflection of nature,” says Ella Messerli, General Manager.
The whole resort seems to be designed around art. The hotel describes itself this way: “On one side of the resort, a long, crescent beach stretches to a rocky point where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. On the other side, the southern point of the great, 1,000-mile long desert of Baja California, painted in hues of sand, ochre and rust, is dramatically juxtaposed with the deep blues of the ocean. In the middle stands the Marquis Los Cabos spotlighting an art collection as unique as the dramatic architecture itself. Inside, a wealth of Mexican paintings and sculptures seem to symbolize the union of vast ocean and rolling desert.” (From the Marquis Los Cabos’ “Spotlight Art Collection as Unique as Its Dramatic Architecture” Press Release, KWE Group Inc.)
How very true. Every room includes a painting by the renowned painter Agustin Castro Lopez. The entrance to the hotel is protected by sculptures of bronze wings, created by Mexican artist Jorge Marin, that symbolize the landing of angels at the Marquis Los Cabos. The resort features over four hundred paintings and breathtaking bronze sculptures. These pieces were specially commissioned by the Marquis Los Cabos Beach Resort from local artists such as Colombian Ana Mercedes Hoyos, Carlos Rios, Fernando Garrido, and Jorge Marin and Agustin Castro.
The real story, though, is the resorts latest package for artists. Starting last December, the Marquis Los Cabos has begun offering the Aspiring Artist Packages, which include three days of private lessons, a Winsor & Newton Victoria Box, Series 7 Kolinsky sable brushes, a porcelain palette, a 4" brush vase, willow charcoal, pencils and more. The package also comes with a tour of Todos Santos, a thriving artist community nearby.
Overall, the resort is an artist oasis for those who don’t want to leave art at home.
