Internationally acclaimed Irish artist Philip Gray who is known for powerful landscapes and seascapes, also describes himself as an extreme artist.

Voted ‘Best New Artist’ at the prestigious Fine Art Trade Guild Awards in 2007 in the United Kingdom, Philip Gray’s dramatic seascapes and landscapes have won him a formidable international reputation. He is now considered one of Ireland’s most celebrated living artists.

Philip Gray, Born in Cork

According to the profile on his personal website, Philip Gray was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1959. From the age of five, he loved art. One of his earliest memories is being tutored in figurative drawing by a family friend, Trevor Scott, the founder of the renowned College of Art and Design in Dublin.

Philip left school at the age of 16 and joined the Irish Navy. Once he had established himself as a naval diver, he began to paint at sea and soon became prolific.

Philip Gray manages to straddle the divide between the world of “high” art and the commercial world very successfully, adding his warm, friendly personality to making his art accessible to a wide range of people. His extreme art only increases the public’s fascination with this personable Irishman.

Powerful Irish Landscapes and Seascapes

Irish Artist, Philip Gray is always inspired by Ireland and by the sea. His dramatic and powerful seascapes especially, which he often sells in limited editions, are unlike any other seascapes and resonate with the truth about the ocean that can only be known to a man who has always lived close to the sea (and spent 17 years in the navy).

According to his website: “The magic in Philip’s art lies in his ability to use his artistic creativity as a natural form of communication. With the extraordinary beauty of the mountainous western island, Ireland, as his inspiration, Philip’s art provides us with the opportunity, albeit momentarily, to remove ourselves from the chaos of day to day life and appreciate the ordered beauty of nature.”

Online Site, From The Gift Box, Adare, Ireland sells the The Philip Gray Artwork Collection. These reasonably priced limited edition Irish prints make it possible for the Cork-born artist’s many fans around the world to own a signed Philip Gray hang original fine art on their walls.

Extreme Art Project

Heard of extreme ironing or extreme fishing? Well this is extreme art. The Extreme Art project involves extraordinary artists like Philip, painting in a number of different extreme environments that are completely uncompromising, such as in shark infested waters, on top of Mount Everest, at the North Pole, while skydiving, in the presence of wild animals, etc.

Why would anyone be crazy enough to do this? There is a reason and a purpose to this of course. The emotional, physical and psychological trials the artist experiences in these situations will obviously affect the way the work is produced which means that the art produced under these extreme conditions is as much about the creation and fearlessness of the work as it is about the image itself.

Award Winning Irish Artist Philip Gray, having qualified as a diver in the navy, decided to paint underwater seascapes, in the presence of sharks.

Celebrity Collectors

Phillip Gray’s eclectic work sells over the world. His celebrity collectors include Bill Clinton, George Bush, Bertie Ahern, and Dolly Parton.
